What is IR35?
IR35 is tax legislation designed to identify 'disguised employees'.
Inside IR35
- You are taxed as an employee, paying full PAYE Income Tax and NI.
- No ability to pay yourself via dividends for status-related income.
Outside IR35
- You can pay yourself a minimal salary and withdraw the rest as dividends.
- Considered a genuine business providing services to a client.
Our Methodology
Our IR35 calculator uses the latest 2024/25 HMRC tax thresholds for Income Tax and National Insurance. When 'Inside IR35' is selected, the calculation assumes the entire contract value (minus the 5% expenses allowance) is processed as salary.
When 'Outside IR35' is selected, the calculation assumes an optimal salary of £12,570 is taken, with remaining profits distributed as dividends after Corporation Tax.
